Maasho, the deliriously passionate Ethiopian artist based in Raleigh, has returned in 2021 with the deceivingly buoyant "Strange," a plainspoken post-punk confessional riddled with bewildered thoughts and tangled feelings.
The multi-faceted artist fancies himself as a genre-defying chameleon of sorts, blending rock and post-punk elements with hip hop, alternative and R&B. On "Strange," Maasho asserts, with frustration, the complicated nature of his current predicament with a significant other/friend, who can't seem to stay happy around Maasho. The artist pens lyrics as if he were a mad scientist trying to figure out why a certain composition or experiment won't work to their advantage-"You say, 'I don't think, I don't know, I don't care, I don't know baby/it's a strange situation.'" He, meanwhile, is personally searching for his own stable happiness through a raspy let-it-all-out mentality. "Strange," in all reality, sounds like a doomed beach day, where the sun shines but the fourth quarter drama shines brighter.
The quick hitting single follows a slew of other tracks that have reached the millions in total streams for the 19-year-old singer/songwriter. After spending two years experimenting with his sound, the young artist is starting to showcase his style.
